Amazon and Allegro product photos: requirements, common mistakes and best practices

For many online stores, marketplaces such as Amazon and Allegro (Poland’s largest marketplace) are the main source of revenue. In a crowded category on either platform, the first thing that catches a shopper’s eye is the main image (the thumbnail). This article covers the requirements of both platforms, the most common mistakes and the best practices that help you increase your conversion rate.

Technical requirements: Amazon vs. Allegro

Both Amazon and Allegro have strict guidelines for product photos. When your images follow them, your listings stay active on both platforms.

  • Background: Both platforms require a clean, 100% white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) on the main image.
  • Resolution: Amazon recommends at least 1,000 x 1,000 pixels to enable zoom. Allegro accepts smaller images; for the best quality, aim for at least 1,000 px on the longer side.
  • Frame fill: The product should take up about 80–85% of the image.
  • Extras in the image: Both platforms prohibit watermarks, logos (unless they appear on the product itself), text, prices and promotional badges on the main image.

3 common mistakes in ecommerce photography

Fixing these 3 basic issues helps you keep the shoppers who open your listing:

  1. Gray, muddy background: It comes from weak lighting and the lack of a professional clipping path (cutting the product out of its background).
  2. Wrong proportions: If the product looks smaller or larger than it really is, buyers are more likely to return it.
  3. Poor sharpness: Blurry photos make it harder for shoppers to trust the seller.

Best practices and additional images

While the main image has to be “boring” and follow the platform rules, the additional images in your gallery give you room to get creative. Show the product in use (lifestyle photos), add close-ups of details and textures, and include infographics that explain features and dimensions. In ecommerce, shoppers judge a product by its photos, since that is how they inspect it before placing an order.
